TO COURT, TO PORT ARTHUR, TO CAMPBELL STREET GAOL Compiled by Laurie Moody In Volume 24 No 4 March 2004 of Tasmanian Ancestry I commenced a series of listings regarding prisoners who had served sentences at the Campbell Street Gaol between the years of 1873–90. The listings were taken from the original gate-book covering the above-mentioned years. Unfortunately, due to the lack of space and the extent of the information within I was only able to provide each prisoner’s surname, given name and the number of times his name appeared in the original gate-book. However, due to interest shown by members who contacted me I have decided to publish a complete list of the records of those 116 prisoners who were sentenced in Hobart, Launceston and Oatlands Courts to Port Arthur before being transferred to Campbell Street Gaol prior to and upon the closure of Port Arthur. These records include age, date received, warrant number, ship arrived on/native born, condition, offence, trade, religion, number of prior offences, read/write, sentence date and release date. Prior convictions were not recorded and would have occurred before the gate-book commenced in 1873. I have also taken the liberty of including arrival dates of ships and individual convict numbers where applicable. Anyone requiring further information or having suggestions can contact me via email lauriem@kooee.com.au or by sending a letter and a stamped self-addressed envelope to 57 Ridge Road, Park Beach, Tasmania, 7173. I trust the following information will be of interest to members of the public Abbreviations: To save space the use of ‘aka’ indicates ‘also known as’, Van Diemen’s Land will appear as VDL, New South Wales as NSW, Free Pardon as FP, Ticket of Leave as TOL, CP as Conditional Pardon, PH. as Pass Holder. Campbell Street Gaol as CSG, Her Majesty’s Prison as HMP, Hobart Supreme Court as HSC, Launceston Supreme Court as LSC, Launceston General Sessions as LGS and Oatlands Court as OC. All other court appearances were either made at the Police Office Hobart or Port Arthur unless otherwise mentioned. Acknowledgements & Thanks: Leonie Mickleborough for support and helping with the editing. Archives Office of Tasmania for convict numbers & shipping lists. Notes: Although many of the prisoners, apart from those who were native born, are shown in the gate-book as being free settlers, most were in fact transported as convicts.
